Although the Nokia N900 is an amazing phone in therms of performance, the real beauty comes from the ability to modify the "smartphone" and play almost everything, including the CPU of the N900. Since this is the first time I have heard of overclocking a mobile device, I must say I am surprised. I have overclocked my home PC many times, but actually overclocking the CPU of my Nokia N900 is something totally different. Also I was surprised from the simplicity of the whole process. Here is how to overclock your Nokia N900:

Just download one of the following files according to the MHz you want to overclock your Nokia N900:

• Download 900 MHz kernel for Nokia N900
• Download 825 MHz kernel for Nokia N900
• Download 800 MHz kernel for Nokia N900
• Download 750 MHz kernel for Nokia N900
• Download 700 MHz kernel for Nokia N900

On the download page of each of the files there are instructions on how to overclock your N900 and how to reset it to the default 600MHz CPU clock. Basically it is something like this:

After downloading save this file in  /home/user/MyDocs/ on your Nokia N900 . To flash your device with this kernel open X Terminal and write the following:

root
fiasco-image-update /home/user/MyDocs/zImageXXX.fiasco

Reboot your device and it will be overclocked to 700 MHz when it boots up. You will notice a change in performance. Use this on your own risk! If you want to go back to the original Nokia N900 Kernel and 600 MHz CPU clock just open X Terminal again and write:

root
apt-get --reinstall install kernel kernel-flasher

Reboot your Nokia N900 and things should be back to where they were.

So what are the benefits of overclocking your Nokia N900? Well the first thing you will notice is speed. Everything works faster and more smoothly, especially the browser which renders the pages quickly. Although many of you might go to 900MHz my advice is to keep it a bit lower at 800MHz. I noticed that the N900 is more responsive and more stable when it runs at 800Mhz. Also please note that you are doing this on your own risk and overclocking your Nokia N900 might void your warranty.

With the new PR1.2 I am not sure that you will be able to overclock your N900 with these files or at least I have not tested it yet!
