Ever since the source code release for many of the Harmattan UI framework components yesterday on Gitorious, I wanted to take a look at what this new Maemo 6 UI framework has to offer. And here is a chance. The Widgets Gallery demonstrates some of the upcoming common components for UI development in Harmattan. It is definitely worth taking a look at.

Since some of you are not familiar with Harmattan, it is a Maemo 6 UI Framework that is based on Qt and is a fully finger optimized UI with kinetics, multitouch, OpenGL application rendering and window composition, developed as Open Source.

The Harmattan UI Framework is a Qt based application development framework targeting mobile and touch screen devices. It provides all the necessary building blocks for creating native Harmattan UI applications. The framework itself is built on top of the Qt Graphics View Framework.

If you are into testing on your N900 you can try out the Widgets Gallery on your Nokia and tell us what you thing, here is the download link and some screenshots from this demo.

If you are feeling like testing there are some other packages available in the Extras-Devel repository on maemo.org which you might find interesting. To activate Extras-Devel on your Nokia N900 do the following in the Application Manager:

1. Navigate to the application menu (tap the title bar)
2. Select "Application catalogs"
3. Select "New"
4. Enter a catalog name "Maemo extras-devel"
5. Enter a web address  http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
6. Enter a distribution "fremantle"
7. Enter components of "free non-free"
8. Select "Save"
