Get the ~|> and more symbols in X Terminal on Nokia N900

When using X Terminal on Nokia N900 there are some annoying things that bothered me a lot like the fact that I was unable to find the pipe "|" symbol nor the "~", ">", "^" symbols. This is a simple hack how to get these symbols into your X Terminal shortcut buttons.

Here is how X Terminal looks before we make the changes:

Due to the fact that these symbols can not be found in X Terminal in order to add them we will have to make a SSH connection to our Nokia N900. To do that we will have to get OpenSSH Client and Server for Nokia N900 and install it on our tablet. Instructions on how to setup a SSH connection to our Nokia N900 can be found on the download page for the SSH server via the link above. Now after we open an SSH connection with the N900 from our PC we just type in these two lines:

gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/keys -t list --list-type=string "[Tab,Escape,bar,greater,asciitilde,grave,asciicircum]"

gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/key_labels -t list --list-type=string "[Tab,Esc,|,>,~,`,^]"

Restart X Terminal if it was open during this process and the new shortcuts should be visible on your bar:

You might notice that the Page Up and Page Down shortcuts are removed but we needed the space for the other symbols which we were unable to get with the virtual keyboard or the physical.

Nice tip.. Just remember to add a way to revert back to default settings in case someone would want to.

You can also press the fn + sym keys simultaneously, to get an onscreen keyboard for these symbols.

If you add more "keys" than the screen can fit they will be put in a drop menu, I have all f keys (F1-F12) and still have page up and down.
